NWN recently attended Cisco Live 2016 in Las Vegas, Nevada. One of the key takeaways this year was an emphasis on the importance of technology. In the keynote address from Karen Walker, CMO and Chuck Robbins, CEO, they stressed that technology is “the single largest driver of change.”
Robbins emphasized the importance of using technology to benefit the greater good by highlighting its importance in fields such as healthcare, education, and government, saying “we must leverage technology to solve the greatest challenges in our world today.”
Along with showcase exhibits and “Innovation Talks,” Cisco unveiled their latest technological advancements.
One of the major themes of the annual conference was examining how to close the gap that exists in security effectiveness due to the large number of complex, disparate security solutions that companies implement. Vulnerabilities arise as enterprises try to connect all the moving pieces of separate security systems. On the other hand, relying on a single system for security can be problematic since no one solution can cover threats to every layer.
New Products at Cisco Live
To counter this “security effectiveness gap” Cisco launched a series of cloud-based security products. Two of these included Cisco Umbrella Roaming and Cisco Umbrella Branch. For customers using AnyConnect VPN, the new Umbrella Roaming provides a centralized, cloud-based security system that guards against off-network threats that would otherwise go unseen. The solution allows employees greater protection against threats while roaming outside their companies’ wireless networks, which in turn provides greater security against outside attacks for enterprises.
Umbrella Branch gives Cisco customers better control over their guest WiFi at branch locations that use Cisco Integrated Services Router. The new security service provides easy content filtering and allows you to “gain visibility and enforcement at the DNS layer,” building a frontline defense against security threats at branch offices.
These new products represent significant advancements for enterprises seeking greater security for mobility. Thanks to Cisco’s focus on developing and enhancing technology that can solve challenges, protecting against the threats to mobile computing has taken a turn towards far less complexity.
